Chinhoyi University of Technology is a government-funded university located in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe.
The university can trace its roots back to 1991 when it was established as the Chinhoyi Technical Teachers’ College; a college originally created to develop technical teachers for Zimbabwe. The college’s main function was to train technical teachers and established the foundation for it to become a university at some later point in time. The college began to establish a reputation as a place where you could get a good education, and consequently, students from around the country began to attend the college. This success for the institution pointed to a significant need for greater access to higher education across Zimbabwe. Then in 1999, as a result of the demand for more tertiary education, the college began offering degree programs through affiliation with the University of Zimbabwe. This was a huge milestone because it provided further academic options for students, while allowing the college to offer degree programs and showcase its ability to be a university. While some changes occurred, much of this was spearheaded by the leadership of the College and faculty who made desired improvements to reflect international standards of higher education.
The successful completion of these initial programs ultimately paved the way for the full transition of the institution into a university. In 2001, an Act of Parliament formally established the university, which granted autonomy to award its own degrees and operate on an independent basis. The transitional step confirmed the institution's role and place within the higher education environment of Zimbabwe and enabled it to respond to regional (and national) educational needs. Furthermore, the new status provided the institution the opportunity to develop research capacity and attract a diverse student population. The institution currently leverages the significant vision of its founders and dedicated faculty and staff as it demonstrates significant growth and expands its role as an incubator of innovation and academic excellence within the context of Zimbabwe. The emphasis on applied education that is industry-relevant facilitates partnerships with the private sector and is beneficial for students as it exposes them to real-world challenges. The university continues to shape the future of Zimbabwe through its active engagement in producing graduates who are prepared to engage in the country's economic and social development meaningfully.
