Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM; Vietnamese: Đại học Quốc gia Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh) is a public research university system in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It is one of the two national universities in Vietnam, the other being Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The history of Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) can be traced back to the early 1900s, when the French colonial government established a number of higher education institutions in the city. After Vietnam gained independence in 1945, these institutions were merged to form the University of Saigon.
In 1995, the Vietnamese government merged the University of Saigon with eight other universities in Ho Chi Minh City to create VNU-HCM. The new university was intended to be a leading multidisciplinary and multisectoral institution that would play a key role in Vietnam's economic and social development.
Since its founding, VNU-HCM has grown rapidly to become one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Vietnam.
VNU-HCM has played a significant role in Vietnam's economic and social development. The university has produced many of the country's leading scientists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, and business leaders.
