Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB) is a private university in Venezuela, founded in 1953 by the Society of Jesus. The university was named after Andrés Bello, a Venezuelan humanist, writer, and philosopher who is considered to be one of the most important figures in Latin American literature.
UCAB was founded in response to the growing need for higher education in Venezuela. At the time, there were only a few public universities in the country, and they were unable to meet the needs of the growing population. UCAB was also founded in response to the desire of the Jesuits to provide a holistic education that emphasized both academic excellence and social responsibility.
In its early years, UCAB offered a limited number of programs in the arts and humanities, business and economics, and education. However, the university quickly expanded its offerings, and today it offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of fields.
UCAB has played an important role in the development of Venezuela. The university has produced many of the country's leading intellectuals, business leaders, and politicians. UCAB has also been a pioneer in social justice initiatives. In the 1960s and 1970s, UCAB was a vocal critic of the Venezuelan dictatorship. The university has also been active in providing educational and social services to the poor and marginalized.
Today, UCAB is one of the leading universities in Venezuela. It is known for its academic excellence, its commitment to social justice, and its international reputation. UCAB is a member of the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU), which is a network of over 280 Jesuit universities around the world.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2024, Andres Bello Catholic University is positioned as the #582 top university in the world, which makes it the #1 top university in Venezuela.
