University of Pittsburgh is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Known as the Pitt Panthers, the usual abbreviation used is Pitt. They have over 28,000 students who study in such fields as education, medicine, nursing, and engineering.
Founded in 1787, the school was then known as Pittsburgh Academy. It was originally a prep school. By 1820, they expanded and were called the Western University of Pennsylvania, abbreviated as WUP. A fire in 1845 wiped out many of the school buildings, and they rebuilt, only to suffer another fire. Finally, they erected a new building, and classes would resume in 1855.
