Bogaziçi University

Boğaziçi University is a public university located in Istanbul.

Boğaziçi University was founded in 1863 as Robert College, the first American higher education institution founded outside the United States. It was founded by Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, an educator, inventor, technician, architect, and builder, and Mr. Christopher Rheinlander Robert, a well-known philanthropist and a wealthy merchant from New York.

Robert College was named after its benefactor, Christopher Rheinlander Robert, and was granted a charter with the power to confer a Bachelor of Arts Degree on its graduates. On September 16, 1863, it opened its doors to students with Dr. Cyrus Hamlin as its first President.

Robert College was a private institution, and its students were primarily from the Ottoman Empire and its successor states. The college offered a rigorous liberal arts education, and its graduates went on to become leaders in government, business, and academia.

In 1971, Robert College was transferred to the Republic of Turkey and renamed Boğaziçi University. The university continued to offer a high-quality liberal arts education, and its graduates continued to be successful in various fields.
