Prince of Songkla University (PSU) is the first university in southern Thailand.
The history of Prince of Songkla University (PSU) can be traced back to 1965, when the Thai government established a committee to study the feasibility of establishing a university in southern Thailand. The committee's report, which was submitted in 1966, recommended the establishment of a university with three campuses: one in Pattani, one in Hat Yai, and one in Phuket.
In 1967, the Thai government approved the establishment of PSU, and the university's first campus was opened in Pattani in the same year. The Hat Yai campus was opened in 1971, and the Phuket campus was opened in 1977. The Surat Thani and Trang campuses were opened in 2002 and 2007, respectively.
PSU was named after Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, Prince of Songkla, the father of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Prince Mahidol was a physician and public health advocate who is credited with modernizing Thailand's healthcare system.
