Mahachulalongkorn Buddhist University

Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University is one of the most prestigious universities in Thailand.

Established in 1887 by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCRU) boasts a history as rich as Thailand's Buddhist heritage. Initially named Mahadhatu Witthayalai, it emerged from King Chulalongkorn's vision to create a center for formalized Buddhist education.  This institute, initially located at Wat Mahadhatu in Bangkok, aimed to provide a platform for monks, novices, and laypeople to delve into the profound wisdom of Buddhist teachings. Classes commenced in 1889, with a strong focus on the Pali language, the key to unlocking the treasures of the Tipitaka, the core Buddhist scriptures.  In 1896, the university adopted its current name, a homage to the king's enduring legacy.

Campus life at MCRU is a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of tradition and contemporary student life. Monks and novices reside in dedicated dormitories, adhering to the principles of monastic life. Lay students, too, have ample opportunities to immerse themselves in Buddhist practices. Meditation sessions, Dharma talks, and participation in Buddhist ceremonies enrich their intellectual pursuits with a spiritual dimension. CRU's motto, "ปัญญา  นำ  คุณธรรม" (Pañña  nam  khuntham), translates to "Wisdom leads to virtue." This powerful statement serves as a guiding light for the entire university community. MCRU's philosophy transcends mere academic pursuits.  Education, in its view, cultivates not just intellectual prowess but also ethical conduct and a heart brimming with compassion.  By nurturing wisdom, MCRU empowers its students to navigate the complexities of life with virtue as their compass.
