Chiang Mai University (CMU) is a public research university in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The history of Chiang Mai University (CMU) dates back to the early 1960s, when the Thai government decided to establish a university in northern Thailand. The university was founded in 1964 under a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. CMU was the first institution of higher education in northern Thailand, and the first provincial university in Thailand.
The university opened with three faculties: Science, Social Sciences, and Humanities. In the early years, CMU focused on undergraduate education. However, the university began to offer graduate programs in the 1970s.
CMU has played a significant role in the development of northern Thailand. The university has produced many of the region's leaders and professionals. CMU is also a major center for research and innovation. The university's research has helped to improve the lives of people in northern Thailand and throughout Thailand.
