Open University of Tanzania is a prominent distance learning public university in Tanzania.

In 1992, this vision became a reality when the Tanzanian Parliament passed an Act establishing the new institution.  This act provided the legal framework and mandate for the university to operate as a public institution dedicated to open and distance learning.  The newly formed entity was tasked with developing and delivering high-quality educational programs through various distance learning methods. The early years focused on building the necessary infrastructure, developing curriculum, and establishing a network of regional centers.  The aim was to create a presence throughout the country, ensuring that even those in remote areas could access educational opportunities.  The institution embraced various technologies, from traditional correspondence courses to broadcasting and eventually, e-learning platforms, to deliver its programs effectively.

Over the years, the institution grew significantly, both in terms of student numbers and the range of programs offered.  It became the largest university in Tanzania by enrollment, a testament to the demand for its services.  The institution played a crucial role in democratizing access to higher education, empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds to pursue their academic and professional goals.  It has continued to evolve, adapting to the changing educational landscape and embracing new technologies to enhance the learning experience for its students.  The focus has remained steadfast: providing affordable, quality education to all who seek it, regardless of their location or circumstances.
