Stockholm University is a public research university in Stockholm, Sweden.
The history of Stockholm University can be traced back to 1865, when the Stockholm City Council formed a committee to establish a higher education institution in the capital. In 1878, the Stockholms Högskola (Stockholm College) was founded, offering courses in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
The college quickly grew in popularity, and by the early 1900s, it had become one of the largest higher education institutions in Sweden. In 1904, the college was granted the right to grant degrees.
In 1960, the Swedish government granted Stockholm College university status, making it the fourth state university in Sweden. The university was renamed Stockholm University, and it continued to grow and expand in the following decades.
In the 1970s, the university moved its main campus to Frescati, a suburb of Stockholm. The Frescati campus is now home to most of the university's faculties and departments.
