Chalmers University of Technology is a private research university located in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Chalmers University of Technology was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Swedish East India Company. He donated part of his fortune for the establishment of an "industrial school".
The university was originally established as a private institution, and was not until 1937 that it became the second state-owned technical university in Sweden. In 1994 the government of Sweden reorganized Chalmers into a private company (aktiebolag) owned by a government-controlled foundation.
Chalmers has always been closely linked to industry, and its early programs focused on training engineers and scientists to meet the needs of the growing Swedish economy. In the 20th century, Chalmers expanded its focus to include research, and the university today is a world leader in a number of areas of engineering and science.
