University of Juba

University of Juba is a public university in Juba, South Sudan. The university was founded in 1975, a time when Southern Sudan lacked higher education institutions. It began with five colleges: Natural Resources and Environmental Studies, Education, Social and Economic Studies, Adult Education, and Health Sciences. The university aimed to provide higher education opportunities to Southern Sudanese, contributing to the region's development and addressing its specific needs. The establishment of the university was seen as a critical step toward enhancing the educational landscape of Southern Sudan, providing a foundation for future generations.

However, the outbreak of the Second Sudanese Civil War in 1983 forced the university to relocate to Khartoum, disrupting its operations and displacing students and faculty. For 22 years, the university functioned in exile, facing numerous challenges and uncertainties. Despite the hardships, the university continued to offer education to its students in a temporary setting, maintaining a commitment to its mission even under difficult conditions. The years in exile strengthened the resolve of both the institution and its community to eventually return and rebuild.

The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 brought hope for a return to Juba. Finally, in 2011, with South Sudan's independence, the university was fully repatriated to its original location. This marked a significant milestone, symbolizing the nation's commitment to education and its aspirations for a brighter future. The return to Juba allowed the university to resume its role in the development of South Sudan, with renewed energy and determination to support the country’s reconstruction efforts.

Today, the university continues to play a vital role in South Sudan's development, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs across various disciplines. It remains the largest university in the country, striving to provide quality education and conduct research relevant to the nation's needs. The university is dedicated to empowering the youth of South Sudan, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development and stability of the nation.
