University of Gezira

University of Gezira (U of G) is a public university located in Wad Medani, Sudan.

The University of Gezira was founded in 1975 as a public university, and the first Sudanese university outside of Khartoum. It was established by Abdelrahim Mahmoud, the then mayor of Wad Medani, and president Gaafar Nimeiry. The university's initial focus was on agriculture, as it is located in the Gezira Scheme, one of the largest agricultural projects in Africa.

In the 1980s, the University of Gezira began to expand its academic offerings, adding new faculties in areas such as engineering, medicine, and law. The university also established a number of research institutes, including the Institute of Environmental Studies and the Institute of Rural Development.

Like many Sudanese universities, the University of Gezira faced a number of challenges in the 2000s, including funding shortages and political instability. However, the university has also undergone a period of transformation, embracing new technologies and adopting innovative teaching methods.
