University of Sri Jayawardenapura
University of Sri Jayawardenapura (USJ) is a public university located in Nugegoda, Sri Lanka.
The history of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura (USJ) can be traced back to 1873, when the Vidyodaya Pirivena was established by the Buddhist monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera. The pirivena was a center of Oriental learning, and it played an important role in the revival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
In 1958, the Vidyodaya Pirivena was granted university status by the Government of Sri Lanka. The university was named the University of Vidyodaya, and it was located in Maligakanda, Colombo. In 1961, the university was relocated to its current campus in Gangodawila, Nugegoda.
In 1971, the university was renamed the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, in honor of Don Stephen Senanayake, the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
The university has grown significantly since its founding. USJ has also played an important role in the development of Sri Lanka. The university has produced many notable alumni, including politicians, business leaders, scientists, and artists. USJ is also home to a number of research centers and institutes, which conduct research in a variety of fields.
