University of Moratuwa

The University of Moratuwa (UoM) is a public university in Sri Lanka. It is located on the bank of the Bolgoda Lake in Katubedda, Moratuwa, about 15 kilometers south of Colombo.

The history of the University of Moratuwa (UoM) can be traced back to the Government Technical College (GTC) founded in 1893 in Maradana, Colombo. The GTC was established to provide technical education to the people of Sri Lanka, which was then under British colonial rule.

In 1960, the GTC was renamed the Ceylon College of Technology, Katubedda (Katubedda Tech). Katubedda Tech offered a variety of courses in engineering, architecture, and applied sciences.

In 1972, Katubedda Tech was incorporated into the University of Ceylon as a campus. In 1978, Katubedda Tech was granted the status of an independent university and renamed the University of Moratuwa.

The early years of UoM were marked by rapid growth and expansion. The university introduced new courses and programs, and established new faculties and departments. UoM also began to conduct research in a variety of fields.

In the 1980s and 1990s, UoM continued to grow and expand. The university also began to play an increasingly important role in the development of Sri Lanka. UoM graduates went on to hold senior positions in academia, industry, and government.
