University of Jaffna is a public university located in Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
The yearning for a university in Jaffna took root in the early 20th century. Prominent figures like P. Ramanathan championed the cause, leading to the establishment of Parameswara College in 1921. This prestigious institution laid the groundwork for higher education in the region.
The dream materialized in 1974 when the Jaffna Campus of the University of Sri Lanka was inaugurated. Initially functioning from Parameswara College premises, it housed three faculties (Humanities, Law, and Science) and a Department of Physical Education.
A significant milestone arrived in 1979 with the implementation of the Universities Act No. 16. The Jaffna Campus gained autonomy and transformed into the independent University of Jaffna, marking a momentous occasion for the Jaffna community.
Unfortunately, the university's journey was not without its share of obstacles. The outbreak of the Sri Lankan Civil War in the 1980s severely impacted its operations. The main campus faced relocation and closure for several years, forcing the university to function from makeshift locations.
Following the end of the war in 2009, the university embarked on a remarkable revival journey. The main campus in Thirunelvely was redeveloped, and new faculties were established in Ariviyal Nagar, Kaithady, and Maruthanarmadam. Today, the University of Jaffna stands tall as a symbol of hope and resilience, offering quality education and research opportunities to students from across the region.
