University of Colombo

University of Colombo is a public research university located primarily in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is the oldest institution of modern higher education in Sri Lanka.

The history of the University of Colombo dates back to 1870, when the Ceylon Medical School was established. The school was affiliated to the University of London in 1907 and became the Ceylon Medical College in 1920.

In 1921, the Ceylon University College was founded, also affiliated to the University of London. The college offered courses in the arts and sciences.

In 1942, the University of Ceylon was established, incorporating the Ceylon Medical College and the Ceylon University College. The University of Ceylon was the first university in Sri Lanka.

In 1963, the University of Ceylon was divided into three universities: the University of Colombo, the University of Peradeniya, and the University of Vidyodaya.
