Kyungwon University is a private university located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.
The university's history began in 1978 with the establishment of Kyungwon Academy. In 1979, Kyungwon Technical College opened, offering a bachelor's degree at a junior college level. However, the institution's founders had bigger aspirations. Their vision was to create a center of higher learning that would contribute significantly to the development of the region and the country, pushing beyond the limits of technical education to a full university system. In December 1981, they received approval to establish a full-fledged four-year university. The following year, in March 1982, the university officially opened its doors with one college and eight departments, welcoming its first cohort of 400 students. This marked a significant step forward in the university’s journey, setting the stage for its evolution into a comprehensive academic institution. The early years were characterized by the rapid development of academic programs and the establishment of strong foundations for future growth.
The university experienced significant growth in the following years, expanding its academic offerings and student enrollment. In 1987, it was promoted to a comprehensive university, further solidifying its position in higher education. This transition allowed the university to diversify its programs, attracting a broader range of students and fostering a more robust research environment. As a result, it gained recognition both nationally and internationally, positioning itself as a leader in education and innovation. However, the university also faced challenges. In the late 1990s, it encountered management difficulties. This led to a change in leadership in 1998, with the Gachon Gil Foundation taking over management. Under new leadership, the university underwent a period of restructuring and revitalization. It focused on improving its academic programs, enhancing its facilities, and expanding its international collaborations. In 2012, a significant milestone occurred when the university merged with Gachon Medical Science University, creating a larger and more comprehensive institution. This merger marked a new chapter in the university's history, paving the way for further growth and development, strengthening its position as a leading institution in both medical and non-medical disciplines.
