The university was established in 1981. It was originally called Sokcho Technical College, and it was renamed Dong-U Technical College in 1983. In 1998, it was renamed Dong-U College, and in 1997, a separate institution called Kyungdong University was founded. In 2012, the two institutions merged, and Kyungdong University was formed.
