Cheongam College's history begins in 1954 when it opened as Suncheon Nursing School, becoming the first vocational training school for women in Jeollanam-do and southeast Korea.
Initially focusing on nursing education, it became an important part of the local fabric by preparing students for healthcare careers. Over time, the institution matured by adding full-scale academic programs. In 1973, it upgraded to Suncheon Professional Nursing School and was upgraded to a college in 1979, gaining respect for the quality of education in nursing and allied health fields. In subsequent years, the institution underwent significant changes in the 1980s, particularly in 1983 when the founder was changed to the Cheongam School Foundation and then Dr. Gil-tae Gang Chair. This transition aided the college's "new leap" to move upon transition to its current site in Deokwol-dong, 1984. The school began to consider pursuing a more expansive academic institution and by 1993 transitioned to a general college admitting male students in 1995, significant in the history of breaking down education barriers.
In the early 2000s, Cheongam College was experiencing tremendous changes in both domestic and global partnerships and initiatives. The College opened various campuses and established the role of lifelong education for the community, including the Yeosu City Hall Campus and the Gurye-Gun Office Campus. Additionally, Cheongam College was chosen for any "Ministry of Education, Science and Technology" initiatives that supported their progress in specialization programs. The business incubator was also successfully launched, and various industry-academy cooperation agreements helped to enhance and strengthen ties with businesses both locally and globally. By 2009, Cheongam College had successfully progressed in shaping its identity and image of being a new type of educational institution. Throughout these years, Cheongam College focused specifically on academic change and was selected for various government projects to improve educational capacity and support services for students. The academic focus resulted in new facilities and a renewed focus on international partnerships. Through all of these changes and growth, Cheongam College gained national recognition and ranked as one of the top junior colleges in Korea and this laid the foundation for future academic initiatives.
