RAU played a significant role in the development of Afrikaans culture and language.

The Technikon Witwatersrand was a technical university in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was founded in 1967, and offered a wide range of vocational and professional programs. TWR played an important role in providing training for the skilled workforce that was needed to support South Africa's economic development.

Vista University was a multi-campus university in South Africa that was established in 1973 during the apartheid era.
