University of Puerto Rico-Rio, Mayaguez Campus (UPRM) is a public land-grant research university in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.
The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) was established in 1911 as the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts of the University of Puerto Rico. It was founded through the efforts of D.W. May, Director of the Federal Experiment Station in Puerto Rico, José de Diego, and Carmelo Alemar. The college was initially located in Río Piedras, but it was moved to Mayagüez in 1912.
In its early years, UPRM focused on agricultural and engineering education. However, it soon expanded to offer programs in other fields, including business administration, arts and sciences, and education. In 1966, UPRM became an autonomous campus of the University of Puerto Rico system.
