Medical University of Warsaw

Medical University of Warsaw (MUW) is a leading public medical university in Warsaw, Poland.

The history of the Medical University of Warsaw (MUW) dates back to 1809, when the Academic-Medical Faculty was established on the initiative of doctors August Wolff, Jacek Dziarkowski, Józef Czekierski, and Franciszek Brandt, and a pharmacy assessor, Józef Celiński. The faculty was part of the Royal University of Warsaw, which was founded in 1816.

In 1831, after the November Uprising, the Royal University of Warsaw was closed by the Russian authorities. The Academic-Medical Faculty was reopened in 1857 as the Medico–Chirurgical Academy. In 1862, the academy was renamed the Imperial University of Warsaw.

After World War I, Poland regained its independence and the Imperial University of Warsaw was renamed the University of Warsaw. The Medical Faculty of the University of Warsaw was established in 1921.

During World War II, the Medical Faculty of the University of Warsaw was closed by the German Nazi occupying forces. However, underground medical teaching continued throughout the war.

After the war, the Medical Faculty of the University of Warsaw was reopened. In 1950, the faculty was separated from the university and became an independent institution, the Medical Academy of Warsaw. In 1993, the academy was renamed the Medical University of Warsaw.

MUW has a long and distinguished history, and it has played a major role in the development of medical education and research in Poland.
