Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) is a public research university located in Poznań, Poland.

The history of Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) in Poznań, Poland dates back to the 16th century, when in 1519 a Roman-Catholic Bishop Jan Lubrański founded the first Academy in town, which back then boasted the status of a higher learning institution. This first institution, however, lasted only for a short time as it closed down in 1595.

The second attempt to establish a higher learning institution in Poznań took place in 1611, when King Sigismund III Vasa granted the Jesuit College the status of a university. This institution was known as the Jesuit Academy of Poznań and lasted until 1773, when it was closed down by the Prussian authorities after the First Partition of Poland.

The next attempt to establish a university in Poznań took place in the early 20th century, after Poland regained its independence in 1918. In 1919, the Wielkopolska State University was founded in Poznań. This university was renamed in 1920 after Adam Mickiewicz, the national poet of Poland.

The new university grew rapidly in the early 20th century. By 1939, the university had over 10,000 students and offered a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.

During World War II, the university was closed by the German occupiers. The university reopened in 1945 after the war.

In the years since World War II, AMU has continued to grow and expand. AMU has played an important role in the development of Poznań and the region.

AMU is a leading research university. The university conducts research in a variety of fields, including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.
