University of the Philippines Diliman

The University of the Philippines Diliman, also referred to as UP Diliman or simply University of the Philippines (UP), is a public, coeducational, research university located in Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines.

The University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) traces its roots back to 1908, when the University of the Philippines was founded in Manila. In 1948, UPD began transferring to its present Diliman campus in Quezon City, a sprawling 493-hectare (1,219-acre) parcel of land that was once part of the hacienda of the Augustinian order. The transfer was completed in 1950, and UPD became the flagship campus of the UP System.

UPD has played a significant role in Philippine history, particularly in the fight for independence and democracy. During the American colonial period, UPD students and faculty were at the forefront of the nationalist movement. In the 1970s, UPD became a center of resistance against the Marcos dictatorship. After the restoration of democracy in 1986, UPD continued to be a leading voice for social justice and reform.

UPD has produced many notable alumni, including former presidents Diosdado Macapagal and Joseph Estrada, national scientists Emil Javier and Alfredo E. Pascual, and artists Lea Salonga and Ricky Davao. Today, UPD remains a premier university in the Philippines and a major center of learning, research, and culture. It is committed to its mission of "providing high quality education, conducting relevant research, and extending professional and technical services to the country."
