University of Santo Tomas

University of Santo Tomas, officially the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, Manila, is a Catholic research university in Manila, Philippines. It is the oldest university in the Philippines and in Asia, having been founded in 1611.

It began as a college for aspirants to the priesthood called the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario. Miguel de Benavides, the third Archbishop of Manila, together with three Dominican priests, established it. On November 20, 1645, Pope Innocent X elevated the college to the status of a university and renamed it the Universidad de Santo Tomás. In 1680, it was placed under royal patronage by King Carlos III of Spain, earning it the title of Real y Pontificia Universidad de Santo Tomás de Manila.

Throughout its long history, UST has played a significant role in Philippine education and society. It was a center of learning during the Spanish colonial period, and it continued to be a major university after the Philippines gained independence from the United States in 1946. UST has produced many notable alumni, including former Philippine presidents, senators, scientists, artists, and religious leaders.

UST is a landmark in the Philippines and a source of pride for Filipinos. It has played a vital role in shaping the country's history and continues to be a leading center of education and research.
