Northwest Samar State University is a public university in the Philippines located in Calbayog, Samar.
The roots of Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) can be traced back to the early 1900s, when it began as the Samar Trade School in 1912. Initially serving as a laboratory shop for the Samar Provincial High School, the school aimed to provide practical skills and vocational training to students, setting the stage for its future development. By 1932, it transitioned into a purely secondary trade school, offering two-year technical courses that catered to the educational needs of the region, laying a foundation for vocational education in Samar. A significant milestone occurred in 1959 when Republic Act No. 2435 authorized the conversion of the Samar Trade School into the Samar School of Arts and Trades (SSAT). This transformation marked a crucial expansion, allowing SSAT to offer a broader range of vocational courses, including areas such as automotive technology, dressmaking, and carpentry. The change addressed the growing educational demands of the region, equipping students with skills that would enhance their employability and contribute to local economic development.
In 1978, SSAT underwent another transformation, becoming the Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology (TTMI). This shift marked a move toward a more comprehensive educational institution that offered both technical and academic programs, reflecting the evolving educational landscape. Named in honor of Tiburcio Tancinco, a prominent figure in the region's development, TTMI aimed to produce graduates who could contribute meaningfully to the community and foster local growth through education. The culmination of this evolution came in 2009 when Republic Act No. 9719 was signed into law, converting TTMI into Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU). This elevation to state university status solidified NwSSU's position as a leading educational institution in the region, enhancing its credibility and capabilities. The law also integrated the Samar State College of Agriculture and Forestry in San Jorge, Samar, further expanding NwSSU's academic offerings and geographic reach, allowing it to serve a broader student population.
Throughout its history, NwSSU has consistently strived to provide quality education and contribute to the development of its community and the nation. Key milestones include its establishment as the Samar Trade School in 1912, its conversion to the Samar School of Arts and Trades in 1959, its transformation into the Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology in 1978, and its elevation to Northwest Samar State University in 2009. Its journey from a small trade school to a state university reflects its commitment to excellence and adaptability in response to the changing needs of its students and the region, demonstrating its pivotal role in the educational landscape of Samar.
