North Visayas State University

North Visayas State University is a public university located in Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines.

The roots of North Visayas State University can be traced back to 1910 when the Leyte Trade School was established in Tacloban City. This school aimed to provide vocational training to young people in the region, equipping them with essential skills for various trades. In 1938, the Leyte Trade School was elevated to a provincial high school and renamed the Leyte Provincial High School, reflecting its expanding role in the local education system. The Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II disrupted the operations of the Leyte Provincial High School, halting its educational activities and impacting the community. However, after the war, the school reopened and resumed serving the educational needs of the community, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity. In 1953, the Leyte Provincial High School was converted into a teacher education institution, known as the Leyte Normal School, marking a new chapter in its commitment to developing future educators.

The Leyte Normal School underwent significant expansion and transformation during the 1950s and 1960s, adding new programs and facilities to meet the growing demand for education. Its enrollment grew steadily, reflecting its increasing popularity and importance. In 1962, the school was renamed the Visayas State College (VSC), which highlighted its broader scope and ambitions to provide a more comprehensive educational experience. In 1978, VSC was elevated to a state university and renamed Visayas State University (VSU). This marked a significant milestone in the institution's history, as it gained greater autonomy and resources to enhance its academic offerings. VSU continued to expand its programs and facilities, solidifying its reputation as a leading agricultural university in the region and a vital contributor to agricultural research and education.

In recent years, VSU has continued to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of higher education, ensuring it remains relevant in a rapidly shifting academic landscape. It has expanded its research activities, strengthened its international linkages, and improved its infrastructure, making it a more competitive institution. VSU remains committed to its mission of providing quality education and contributing to the development of the region and the country, reflecting its ongoing dedication to fostering growth and innovation in various fields.
