Naval State University

Naval State University is a public non-profit university located in Naval, Biliran, Philippines.

Established in 1945, the institution began as the Naval Institute of Technology, founded by Fr. Luis M. Galang, O.P., a Dominican priest and the parish priest of Naval, Biliran. Initially functioning as a secondary school, it focused on offering vocational courses to meet local educational needs and prepare students for various trades.

In 1950, the institute transitioned into a technical college, expanding its offerings to include courses in agriculture, home economics, and industrial arts. By 1962, it had progressed to a junior college, providing two-year programs in education, engineering, and commerce, which further enhanced its academic stature and reputation in the region. The year 1972 marked a significant transition when the junior college was granted university status and renamed as a college. This change allowed for the introduction of four-year bachelor's degree programs in education, engineering, agriculture, and commerce, reflecting its commitment to higher education. In 1990, it achieved university status again, demonstrating its growth and expanded capabilities.

Over the years, the institution has continued to evolve, adding new academic programs in fields such as nursing, information technology, and hospitality management. It has also established extension campuses throughout Biliran province to broaden access to education, ensuring that more students have the opportunity to pursue their academic goals. In 2019, the institution was granted autonomous status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), which provided it with greater control over its operations and the ability to make independent decisions. This autonomy has enabled the institution to enhance its programs and better serve its student population.

Today, it is recognized as a leading educational establishment in the Philippines, known for its quality education, affordable tuition fees, and commitment to community service. Additionally, it is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASEAN University Network), further solidifying its role in the regional educational landscape.
