Mapúa Institute of Technology (MIT), also known as Mapúa University, is a private, non-sectarian university in the Philippines.
The history of Mapúa University can be traced back to 1921, when Don Tomas B. Mapúa, a graduate of Cornell University and the first registered Filipino architect and civil engineer, established the Mapúa School of Technology in his home in Quiapo, Manila. The school offered courses in architecture and civil engineering, and it was initially taught by Don Tomas himself and his friends.
In 1925, the school was renamed the Mapúa Institute of Technology (MIT) and it moved to its current campus in Intramuros, Manila. MIT continued to grow rapidly in the ensuing years, and it soon became one of the leading engineering schools in the Philippines.
During World War II, the MIT campus was heavily damaged. However, the school was able to resume operations in 1946.
In 2000, MIT was acquired by the Yuchengco Group of Companies. The Yuchengcos invested heavily in the school, and they helped to transform MIT into a world-class university. In 2003, MIT was renamed Mapúa University.
Today, Mapúa University is one of the most prestigious universities in the Philippines. It is known for its rigorous academic standards and its commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Mapúa is also a leading provider of continuing education and training programs for professionals.
