Mapúa Institute of Technology or MIT, also known as Mapúa University, is located in the Philippines and is a private, non-sectarian university.
One can trace the history of Mapúa University to 1921, when Don Tomas B. Mapúa, a Cornell University graduate, the first registered Filipino architect, and civil engineer, established the Mapúa School of Technology within his home in Quiapo, Manila. Offering courses in architecture and civil engineering, the school was initially under the tutelage of Don Tomas himself, assisted by his friends. The school was renamed the Mapúa Institute of Technology in 1925 and moved to its present campus situated in Intramuros, Manila. MIT continued to progress in the ensuing years, and soon it became one of the biggest engineering schools in the Philippines. During World War II, the MIT campus was heavily damaged. However, the school resumed classes in 1946. In 2000, MIT was acquired by the Yuchengco Group of Companies. The Yuchengcos made notable investments in the school and helped give it a variety of attributes to transformational improvements into a well-known university. In 2003, MIT was christened Mapúa University. Nowadays, Mapúa University is one of the best-known universities in the Philippines. MAPÚA is mostly known for its high academic standards and commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Also, Mapúa is a leading provider of continuing education and training programs for professionals.
