Holy Name University

Holy Name University is a private, Catholic, research, co-educational basic and higher education institution located in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines.

The story of Holy Name University begins with the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), a Roman Catholic missionary congregation founded in Germany in 1875. The SVD's mission was to spread the Gospel to non-Christian peoples, embodying a spirit of service and dedication to the teachings of Christ. In the early 20th century, the congregation established a presence in the Philippines, where they sought to address the spiritual and educational needs of the local populations. Their arrival marked the beginning of a transformative journey in the region, blending faith with education as a means of empowerment.

In 1942, the SVDs established a mission station in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. The mission's primary goal was to evangelize the local population and provide basic education, recognizing that education was not only a means of imparting knowledge but also a catalyst for social change. The missionaries quickly understood the importance of education as a tool for development and empowerment, laying the groundwork for a more educated and informed community. They initiated various programs that focused on literacy and practical skills, aiming to uplift the local populace through education and faith.

In 1947, the SVDs founded a small college in Tagbilaran. This college was initially focused on providing secondary education, catering to the immediate needs of the community for quality schooling.
