The history of Ateneo de Manila University can be traced back to 1590, when the Jesuits founded one of the first colleges in the Philippines, the Colegio de Manila (also known as the Colegio Seminario de San Ignacio). The school formally opened in 1595 and offered a variety of courses, including Latin, grammar, rhetoric, and philosophy.
In 1859, the Jesuits established the Escuela Municipal de Manila, a public primary school in Intramuros. The school was later renamed Ateneo Municipal de Manila, and in 1912, it became a private institution. The Ateneo moved to its current campus in Loyola Heights, Quezon City, in 1952.
