National University of Asunción

National University of Asunción (UNA), also known as the Universidad Nacional de la Asunción in Spanish, is the oldest and most prestigious public university in Paraguay.

The history of the National University of Asunción (UNA) can be traced back to the early 19th century, when the first attempts were made to establish a higher education institution in Paraguay. However, it was not until 1889 that the university was officially founded by the Law of “Secondary and Higher Education”. The university was inaugurated on March 1, 1890, with a small number of students and faculty.

In the early years of its existence, UNA faced a number of challenges, including financial difficulties and political instability. However, the university gradually grew and expanded its offerings. By the early 20th century, UNA had become the leading university in Paraguay, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.

During the Chaco War (1932-1935), UNA played an important role in supporting the Paraguayan war effort. The university provided medical care to the wounded and trained soldiers and officers. After the war, UNA resumed its focus on education and research.

In the 1960s and 1970s, UNA experienced significant growth in enrollment and faculty. The university also expanded its physical facilities, building new campuses in San Lorenzo and other parts of Paraguay.

During the Stroessner dictatorship (1954-1989), UNA was subject to government interference and repression. However, the university maintained its academic independence and continued to produce graduates who played leading roles in Paraguayan society.

After the fall of the Stroessner dictatorship, UNA entered a new period of growth and development. The university expanded its academic offerings, established new research centers, and strengthened its ties to international institutions.

National University of Asunción is ranked as the #1 top university in Paraguay during 2024. This is the same rank as last year.
