The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (UniTech) was established in 1965 as the Papua New Guinea Institute of Higher Technical Education, originally located in Port Moresby. In 1968, it moved to its current 2-square-kilometer campus outside of Lae. In 1970, the institute was renamed the PNG Institute of Technology, and in 1973, it gained full university status, becoming the Papua New Guinea University of Technology.
