University of Panamá

University of Panamá (UP) is the oldest and largest public university in Panama.

In 1935, amidst aspirations for a more educated populace, the University of Panamá (UP) rose from the ashes of several smaller schools and institutes. Operating from a single wing of the National Institute in Panama City, it initially enrolled just 175 students eager to delve into fields like education, commerce, natural sciences, pharmacy, pre-engineering, and law.

The fledgling university quickly gained momentum, establishing new faculties and research centers to cater to the nation's evolving needs. Schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and veterinary medicine joined the ranks, while groundbreaking research initiatives took root in fields like tropical agriculture and marine biology. By the mid-20th century, the UP had blossomed into a vibrant hub of knowledge, boasting a diverse student body and a growing reputation for academic excellence.

The latter half of the 20th century proved tumultuous for Panama, and the UP inevitably reflected these societal shifts. Student protests erupted against political and economic injustices, with the university becoming a focal point for social and political activism. Despite the challenges, the UP persevered, adapting its curriculum and structure to better serve the needs of a changing Panama. New programs emerged in fields like journalism, communication, and social work, reflecting the growing demand for skilled professionals to address Panama's complex social realities.

Today, the University of Panamá stands tall as a symbol of national pride and intellectual achievement. Its academic offerings encompass virtually every field imaginable, from traditional humanities and sciences to cutting-edge fields like robotics and artificial intelligence. The UP remains deeply committed to research and innovation, fostering collaborations with international institutions and spearheading crucial projects in areas like sustainable development and environmental protection.
