The history of the University of the Punjab can be traced back to the early 1860s, when a group of prominent citizens of Lahore, including the British administrator and educator Sir Henry Lawrence, began to advocate for the establishment of a university in the Punjab region. The British colonial government was initially hesitant to support the idea, but eventually agreed to establish a university college in Lahore.

The university continued to grow and expand in the following decades, and by 1947, it had become one of the largest and most prestigious universities in British India.

After the partition of India in 1947, the University of the Punjab was divided into two separate universities: one in Lahore, Pakistan, and the other in Chandigarh, India.
