Sultan Qaboos University
Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) is a public university located in Al-Seeb, Oman.
The history of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) can be traced back to 1971, shortly after Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said ascended to the throne of Oman. Sultan Qaboos was a visionary leader who recognized the importance of education in developing Oman and its people. He envisioned a university that would provide Omanis with access to high-quality education in a variety of disciplines.
In 1976, Sultan Qaboos established a committee to study the feasibility of establishing a national university. The committee recommended that the university be located in Al-Seeb, a coastal town located just outside of Muscat, the capital of Oman. Construction on the university campus began in 1982 and the first students were enrolled in 1986.
SQU has played a major role in the development of Oman. The university has produced thousands of graduates who have gone on to hold key positions in government, industry, and academia. SQU is also a major center for research and innovation, helping to drive Oman's economic and social development.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2024, Sultan Qaboos University is positioned as the #454 top university in the world, which makes it the #1 top university in Oman.
