The story of NMBU begins in 1859, not with classrooms and labs, but with a modest "Norwegian Agricultural Postgraduate College." By 1897, it blossomed into the "Norwegian College of Agriculture," its roots stretching into research and scientific exploration.

Over the next century, the college grew steadily, weathering changes in name and status. It gained "university college" status in 1897, finally achieving full university recognition in 2005. Its focus expanded beyond agriculture, embracing broader life sciences, environmental concerns, and the intricate world of food production. In 2014, a significant merger united NMBU with the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, solidifying its position as the sole veterinary education provider in Norway.
