The university's history began in 1978 when it was established as the Ogun State College of Education. Initially located in Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, the college's primary mission was to train teachers for primary and secondary schools across Ogun State and Nigeria. In 1994, the college was renamed to honor the renowned Nigerian educationist and human rights activist, Tai Solarin, reflecting its commitment to excellence in teaching and human development.
