Kwara State Polytechnic is a tertiary institution in Kwara State, Nigeria, located in Ilorin.
Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Nigeria was established in 1973. The announcement for the establishment of the Kwara State Polytechnic was made in 1971 while it was established by Colonel David Bamigboye, the then Military Governor of Kwara State. The establishment of the polytechnic was part of a broader strategy to improve access to higher education and provide technical education that could facilitate the economic growth of Nigeria. The institution was established to meet the escalating demand for skilled manpower to facilitate development in the various sectors of the economy. When the polytechnic was formally known as a polytechnic, it started with an initial enrollment of 110 students with pre-university advanced level courses in different disciplines. Nevertheless, it later developed into an institution providing National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in engineering, technology, applied sciences, management and commerce, in response to the demand for technical education, resulting in national diploma programs and higher national diploma. Finally, the institution also constructs the required infrastructure, including laboratory facilities, to support the new programs and learning experience for students.
Over the years, the polytechnic has expanded massively and is now recognized as a significant institution known for its focus on training and exposure to industry. The polytechnic has always aimed to provide students with skills for effective contributions and success in their distinct professions and for the good of the Nigerian economy. The polytechnic nurtured strong collaborations with industry that gave rise to internships, work-study program opportunities, and partnerships that join academia with the workplace. These collaborations have famously made its graduates more attracted by employers than comparable candidates both in Nigeria and other parts of the world. Today, Kwara State Polytechnic is still growing to keep pace with the evolving global needs of the sectors. However, as the polytechnic changes, it remains committed to providing affordable, accessible, and quality education to all students from different backgrounds. As the student population grows and academic portfolio expands, the polytechnic is positioning itself as a significant player in Nigeria's higher education sector and contributing heavily towards economic growth and the technological advancement of our land.
