The university was established in 1981 through Law No. 4, passed by the Imo State House of Assembly. It admitted its first cohort of 392 pioneer students on October 23, 1981, marking the beginning of its journey in higher education. After the creation of Abia State in 1991, the Uturu campus of the university transitioned to become the Abia State University.
