University of Namibia

University of Namibia (UNAM) is a multi-campus public research university in Namibia, as well as the largest university in the country.

The University of Namibia (UNAM) emerged alongside the nation itself, reflecting the hopes and aspirations of a newly independent Namibia. Founded in 1992, just two years after Namibia's liberation from South African rule, UNAM's creation wasn't just about education, but about building a national identity. It brought together various institutions, including the former University of South West Africa and several training colleges, into a unified public university with a mission to serve the Namibian people.

Though young, UNAM's origins reach back further. Its foundations lie in the diverse educational initiatives during colonialism and resistance movements. German colonial schools formed the earliest seeds, later supplemented by South African Bantu education and independent schools established by indigenous communities and liberation movements. UNAM embraced this complex past, building on existing knowledge while forging a new path as a center for critical, inclusive, and relevant education.

Today, UNAM stands as a vibrant and diverse institution. It's the nation's leading university, contributing significantly to research, economic development, and social progress. UNAM's story is one of resilience, inclusivity, and a profound commitment to shaping a brighter future for Namibia.
