University of Guadalajara

University of Guadalajara (UdeG) is a public research university located in the Mexican city of Guadalajara.

The history of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) can be traced back to 1696, when Friar Felipe Galindo y Chavez requested King Charles II of Spain to increase the range of the recently founded Royal Seminary of San Jose. The seminary had been offering higher education in Guadalajara since 1586, and as a result, it was the first institution that granted academic degrees in the city.

In 1791, the Royal Seminary of San Jose was officially granted the status of a university, and it was renamed the Royal University of Guadalajara. The university was initially closed during the Mexican War of Independence, but it was reopened in 1826.

From 1826 to 1860, the university was closed and reopened several times, as a consequence of the constant conflict between conservative and liberal governments in the young Mexican Republic. The university was renamed the Instituto de Ciencias del Estado or the Universidad de Guadalajara depending on which side was in power.

In 1914, the Escuela Preparatoria de Jalisco, the first high school in the state, was created. In 1925, the foundation of the University of Guadalajara was acknowledged and its first Governing Laws (Ley Orgánica) were passed, thanks to the work of Governor José Guadalupe Zuno Hernández and Lic. José Bravo.

The university experienced a period of rapid growth in the 20th century. In 1935, the Faculty of Medicine was founded, making it the first medical school in the state of Jalisco. In the following decades, new faculties and schools were opened, and the university expanded its reach throughout the state.

The university is committed to social responsibility, and it plays an important role in the development of the state of Jalisco. UdeG offers a variety of programs and services to the community, including educational programs, cultural events, and health care services.

UdeG has a long and distinguished history, and it has produced some of the country's most notable leaders and scholars. The university is known for its academic excellence, and it is ranked among the top universities in Mexico and Latin America.
