The story begins in 1938, amidst the turbulent backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. As Spanish Republican intellectuals sought refuge in Mexico, the idea for an institution fostering academic exchange blossomed. La Casa de España en México, established in 1938, sowed the seeds for what would become Colmex.

In 1940, under the patronage of prominent figures like Alfonso Reyes and Daniel Cosío Villegas, Colmex blossomed into a full-fledged institution. Initially named the Centro de Estudios Históricos (Center for Historical Studies), it soon expanded its scope to encompass the broader realm of social sciences and humanities.

The seeds of Colmex's prestige took root in 1951 with the launch of "Historia Mexicana," a journal that quickly became a cornerstone of historical scholarship in the region. Its scholarly weight further solidified in 1964 with the formation of the Centro de Estudios Económicos y Demográficos, expanding Colmex's reach to tackle pressing economic and demographic challenges.

Finally, in 1976, Colmex reached a physical and symbolic peak with the inauguration of its stunning modern campus, designed by renowned architects Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky.
