The University of Mauritius (UoM) is the premier university in Mauritius.

Early debates centered on the university's purpose, with two contrasting visions: Adrien d'Epinay's call for a traditional institution rooted in law and the Royal College, and Colin Leys' advocacy for a "downreach" model focused on serving a small, developing nation. Leys' vision ultimately prevailed, leading to the university's emphasis on practicality and relevance to Mauritian society.

In 1971, the University of Mauritius Act solidified its structure and goals, and in 1972, Queen Elizabeth II officially inaugurated the institution. Since then, UoM has steadily expanded, offering today a diverse range of disciplines.
