University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) is a public research university in Skudai, Johor, Malaysia.

The history of technical education in Malaysia can be traced back to 1904, when a Technical School was established in Kuala Lumpur to train Technical Assistants for the Federated Malay States Departments of Railways, Survey and Public Works. The school was later renamed the Technical College, Kuala Lumpur in 1957.

In 1966, the Malaysian government decided to establish a technical university to meet the growing demand for engineers and technologists in the country. The Technical College, Kuala Lumpur was chosen to be the nucleus of the new university, and was renamed the Engineering College, Kuala Lumpur in 1966.

The Engineering College, Kuala Lumpur was officially upgraded to university status on December 3, 1972, and renamed the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM). UTM was the first public university in Malaysia to be dedicated to engineering and technology. UTM began its operations in 1973 with an initial enrollment of 260 students.

UTM has grown rapidly since its inception. Today, it is one of the largest and most prestigious public universities in Malaysia. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. UTM also has a strong research track record, and its researchers have made significant contributions to fields such as renewable energy, sustainable development, and healthcare.
