Universiti Tenaga Nasional, commonly known as UNITEN, is a unique private university in Malaysia located in the town of Putrajaya and the district of Muadzam Shah. The university, which Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) operates as its first private institution, serves as one of the earliest private university establishments in Malaysia. The university operates as a leading educational institution which conducts research activities through its extensive campus that showcases its industrial history. The institution has achieved a "Tier 5" (Excellent) rating in the Malaysian Higher Education Rating System, which demonstrates its status as a high-quality technical and professional education provider for the surrounding area.
The history of the institution began in 1976 when it was established as the Institut Latihan Sultan Ahmad Shah (ILSAS), a corporate training center for the National Electricity Board. The center received its upgrade to degree-awarding institution status through the establishment of Institut Teknologi Nasional (IKATAN) in 1994 because industrial development created increasing demand for technical specialists during that period. The institution reached university status in 1997 when it changed its name to Universiti Tenaga Nasional. The transition enabled the university to expand its educational programs beyond vocational training which helped the institution develop human capital during the "Vision 2020" expansion period.
