Catholic University of Malawi is a private university located at Limbe, Malawi.
It was founded in 2004 by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, formed by Catholic bishops committed to advancing education in the country. It was established with the vision of providing complete education based on Catholic values and ethics. The church intended to provide this institution for the very purpose of meeting the increasing demand for quality higher education in Malawi. The bishops held noble intentions of developing the intellectual and moral faculties of the youth in the nation. The setting up of the university was necessitated by the need to provide quality higher education compatible with the national developmental goals and at the same time boost the spiritual growth of the graduates. Besides, it was to create a space for raising leaders with good values, integrity, and social responsibility.
The university welcomed its first group of students back in 2006, offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs right from the start. Initially with a very low number of students and programs, the institution has grown considerably over the years. It is still making strides in expanding its offerings to address the changing needs of the labour market in the country. This growth goes hand-in-hand with infrastructural investments, research development, and human-resource development. When it started, it was neither a lone ranger nor a respected university of higher learning in Malawi, known for her devotion toward academic excellence and community service and their proud tradition of producing well-trained professionals capable of contributing to a positive society. This will be making their contribution from other universities and organizations in the strengthening leadership in the area of education and service. Its focus on social impact is the main form in which its commitment to building a just and equitable society within the country is manifested.
