University of Antananarivo (UA) is the premier public university of Madagascar, located in the capital city of Antananarivo.
The University of Antananarivo traces its roots back to the establishment of the Institute for Higher Studies in Antananarivo (IHEA) on December 16, 1955. This institute was created in response to the growing demand for higher education in Madagascar, which had gained independence from France in 1960. In 1961, the IHEA was renamed the University of Madagascar, and it became the main center for higher education in the country. The university quickly expanded, opening five additional branches in other major cities: Antsiranana, Fianarantsoa, Toamasina, Toliara, and Mahajanga.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the University of Madagascar played a key role in the development of Madagascar. The university produced a highly skilled workforce that was essential for the country's economic and social development. The university also conducted research that addressed national challenges, such as poverty, food insecurity, and disease. However, the university faced significant challenges during this period. The government's funding for the university was often inadequate, leading to overcrowded classrooms and a lack of resources. The university also faced political instability, as the country experienced a series of coups and government changes.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the university began to undergo a period of reform. The government increased its funding for the university, and the university began to adopt new teaching and research methods. The university also began to develop closer ties with international universities. As a result of these reforms, the University of Antananarivo has become a more modern and efficient institution. The university continues to play a vital role in the development of Madagascar, and it is committed to providing its students with a high-quality education.
