The University of Luxembourg was founded in 2003 by the merger of four existing higher education institutions: the Centre universitaire, the Institut supérieur d'études et de recherches pédagogiques, the Institut supérieur de technologie, and the Institut d'études éducatives et sociales. The merger was part of a government initiative to create a single, world-class university in Luxembourg.
